16 March (Monday) - YAN YATES, ZENA, ROXANNE DE BASTION

YAN YATES
ON STAGE: 9.30

Yan Yates is a currently unsigned singer songwriter, originally from Middlesbrough but now playing mainly in the London area. His music is advertised as 'nu-folk' which I think of as essentially traditional folk music with some experimental or technological influences. I'd describe Yates' music as more typical acoustic guitar songs with a variable level of influence from folk music but also with some resonance with country music and a bit of harmonica from the blues. If I heard this on the radio,I wouldn't necessarily flag it as folk. Its the sort of music that would be equally at home round the camp-fire or playing to a small cosy venue.

ZENA
ON STAGE: 8.45
Zena is an excitingly different singer-songwriter with a raw talent for sensual, arresting songs that already has people talking.

A fan of the classic female troubadours - Carole King, Carly Simon, Kate Bush - Zena has already established a loyal fan base as passionate about her rich, intimate and contemporary songs as she is. One of the UK's most exciting producers KK (Dido, Bjork, Kylie, Shaznay Lewis, Santana) represented by Stephen Budd Management, was so taken by her he agreed to produce her new EP, out now.

A classically trained musician, Zena plays acoustic guitar, piano and omnichord both on the EP and live; she is equally at home performing on her own or with a full band, and is kept busy with bookings to play all over London.

Last year Zena played a mini-tour in Asia taking in a gig at Tokyo's Apple Store and a string of Australian dates, Zena is currently playing gigs in London and working on new material.

ROXANNE DE BASTION
ON STAGE: 8.00
21 year old singer/songwriter Roxanne de Bastion has been performing in and around Berlin for the last 10 years. Her performances, featuring an impressive repertoire of original material, also include songs by The Beatles, Bob Dylan and other artists of influence. Whether in front of an audience of 50 or 5000, she has a natural, vibrant and highly charismatic stage presence, both as a solo artist and fronting her band.

In October 2006, Roxanne de Bastion ventured to the UK, where she’s managed an unrelenting schedule of performing, recording and band – ing. Highlights of her performing career (open air Festivals, rock venues and acoustic showcases) have been London’s The Troubadour, The 100 Club and The legendary Cavern Club in Liverpool.

”What hits the audience, even more than Roxanne’s vibrant stage presence, is the music itself. Her music. Like the greater songwriters of the last century – I’m thinking of the likes of Jimmy Webb, Bob Dylan, Laura Nyro, Carloe King, John Lennon and Joni Mitchell – Roxanne’s songs are deeply original yet touch the listener as if they already know them. In short, they are instantly memorable.” (FOCUS July 07)
